I have to put an apology out here because of a decision that the City Council made last week from my recommendation. Bobb Johnston resigned last week as the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Wilburton effective immediately to take a teaching and coaching position at Panola Public Schools. It has always been the citys practice to allow current employees on staff an opportunity if qualified to advance up the ladder when positions become available. Debbie Vega has been with the city now for almost two years and is a resident of the community with children enrolled at Wilburton Public Schools. When she approached me with an interest in the newly open position I required her to submit her qualifications by resume for me to review and submit to the council for a vote if I felt she was qualified. I felt she was and I did recommend her to be hired on as the new director last Thursday evening and the council agreed and unanimously approved her. We were a bit under the gun because sign-ups for Soccer were last Thursday and we were very fortunate to have a qualified person on staff willing to step in immediately. If we dont have qualified people on staff willing to step into positions we have that come open, we always publish for a couple of weeks in the newspaper and do interviews to find the very best person we can. I obviously upset a very good friend of mine over how this was handled, and for that I sincerely apologize. We always try to be fair in how we do business and always have, but sometimes people do get upset because we dont fully explain our processes. I hope that this family whom I have been good friends with my entire life can understand that I didnt intentionally try to be unfair or biased in my recommendation to the city council. We strive to make the best decisions we can to benefit everyone.
