I have to remind myself and others that being an atheist doesnt mean that one is somehow more enlightened than the general public or that one is capable of seeing and thinking beyond ones privilege. Hell, half of the time I get things wrong and have to amend my own positions on certain things. I never understood the devotion and reverence that many of my fellow atheists have towards the so-called Four Horsemen and other prominent atheist figures. Although, I respect their expertise in areas such as evolutionary biology, perceptual psychology, and neurology, I NEVER thought that they were any smarter than I was nor many of the people I call my facebook friends (yes, even many of the theists). These men and women are capable of getting it wrong and they often do. Instead of feeling disappointed anx let down because Sam harris or Richard Dawkins said or wrote something unbelievably stupid, just remember that they are fallible human beings with the same hang ups as the rest of us. It is just that their stature in academia or the media gives them more to express their silly notions more than the rest of us.
