I have to share what Bill Harrison, executive director of the Gay Community Center of Richmond, sent out in his e-mail newsletter this week regarding CABARET: We have all seen the reviews. RTP has been at its best the last few weeks with its production of Cabaret. Media and fans have raved about every aspect of the musical and justifiably so. At one moment the audience would find themselves in hysterics and the next, stunned into silence. There is nothing more we can say about the caliber of the show that noted reviewers have not already said. But, more, much more than performances garnering standing ovations took place. RTP has been able to accomplish what many LGBT organizations strive to do every day. They have captured the hearts, minds and pocketbooks of non-LGBT people. Often throughout the Cabaret schedule, the majority of audience members were straight folks, ranging from the twenty-somethings to seniors. Bravo. Through the stage, bonding us through feelings, be they laughter or tears, RTP has excelled in uniting communities. RTP has helped others get to know us better. And people getting to know each other is the best way of eliminating prejudice. One more time, BRAVO!
