I have tried to keep my page public and I dislike banning people. Most of the time trolls and bigots are called out by awesome fb friends ^.^ But Im Going to have to rethink how I handle my page. I was blocked for fb, which doesnt seem like a big deal, but ultimately it was a big deal. I had contacts of ppl to meet up with in ferguson. All details were being handled via pm on fb. Once I couldnt log on, I couldnt finalize plans. Consequently, I missed some connections while I was in ferguson. Not being able to get on fb legitimately hurt my ability to participate in activism. Fortunately, the community in ferguson was welcoming and helped me. But Ill be honest, Im read as black and Im from Chicago. If I had been another race or from another place not known for police brutality, I may not have not been quite as welcome in various social circles. And thats fair, the residents of Ferguson are under no obligation to be nice to anyone at this point. Their distrust is valid. Between media lies, fear of police retaliation, white saviors, and mourning the death of a member of the community, they dont have time to vet volunteers. So Im both fortunate and grateful they were so willing to accept me into their community. But that could have gone the other way. I could have shown up with hundreds of dollars of food and supplies and been ignored by everyone because I didnt have a contact waiting there to vouch for me. And I really cant afford to risk that again. So Im going to run my page like I mod groups. A couple warnings and then trolls and bigots will be banned. End of. Theres too much at stake to let hateful creatures ruin it.
