I have tried to seek the opinion of young Arunachalees (in a closed group) on the issue of Inheritance Rights of Arunachalee women to landed properties, so far denied by customs in most tribes of the state. The debate had officially started in 1989. And still the debate goes on. The resistance is still palpable and vociferous. The main contention is that if Arunachalee women/girls are given landed property rights, the land will go into the hands of non-Arunachalee men who will come (in hordes?) to marry Arunachalee girls. Makes me wonder. Thanks to the positively supportive ones. Mostly silent supporters though. Customs are not yet codified in Arunachal. They could still be allowed to evolve to take in the good tenets from other existing laws like the Hindu Inheritance Law. And deprivation of tribal women from such inheritance right could be a point for the protagonists of the Uniform Civil Code. My apprehension.
