I have two problems with this whole issue: 1. I simply dont believe any shock or surprise on the part of the government - they supplied the figures in the first place, so they knew exactly what was going to happen. I also struggle to believe that politicians of any other colour didnt see this coming; with the EU being such a contentious issue at the moment and the fact that the economic revisions were big news when they first came out it is simply negligence if it has gone unnoticed. 2. Its not as if it is a system that was forced upon us last week. The system was agreed to and was perfectly acceptable when it worked in our favour. To cry foul now shows at best a lack of foresight and at worst is an indictment of the petty and selfish attitude exhibited in certain corners of the political discourse. I am not trying to claim that politicians should not try to save money on behalf of those they represent, rather that the childish response to a document emerging at a politically awkward time is verging on ridiculous. P.S. Any claims of EU money-grabbing simply dont stand up as its set to give out more than its asking for.
