I havent had an angry rant for awhile however today I am. In the past weeks I have been hearing of more and more primary schools that have banned play before school and make students sit on benches outside classrooms. The schools that are doing this are expressing the fear based duty of care and someone could be hurt justifications. One parent was told - it is the law. Please show us the law that states that. The evidence about the importance of play that involves human interaction and physical movement is HUGE. Can my FB community help us to explore this modern dilemma - is it happening all over the world or just Australia? If so how can we bring back play before school? Would it help if parents signed waivers that allow their kids to play? Do we fund raise so we can afford to have teachers on duty like recess and lunch time? Please do not accept that this needs to happen. I have visited schools that have free play before school - and who seem to manage fine. Once again - have we allowed our fear of risk to consume a normal, healthy part of childhood? What risks to we create by stealing time to build friendships, discharge excess energy, build self regulation and make school fun? GGGGRRRRRRRR
