I havent had the urge to comment on this #AntonioMartin situation because it is too easy to be angry immediately after hearing the controversial news. I waited. I waited for the proof, the evidence of wrongdoing, the justification for the murder of a young man...a human being regardless of how misguided an individual he may have been. The issue I have with this young mans death isnt the fact that he was a young black man killed by a white cop. The problem with this young mans death is the callousness with which the police approached the immediate aftermath of the situation. Instead of calling for emergency medical personnel after neutralizing the threat, they let him die right there on the pavement as if he were less than human. Im sick of seeing all of this closet racist talk about how he was a thug or the stop breaking the law talk because as a society, we are beyond this retributive way of thinking--at least Id hoped we would be past it by now. No PERSON deserves to be shot down and killed in the street and allowed to die at the scene. Its inhuman and completely unnecessary. For entities that fancy themselves heroes and protectors of the law, police break the law more than anyone...and they do so in the most disgusting and barbaric ways. We as humans are better than this. It is true that no one is perfect...no one is asking the police to be perfect. All I want--and what I believe most people in the world want--is for there to be some inkling of humanity left in the people we entrust to patrol our communities and protect our freedom. This goes out to all #lawenforcement #police #emergencypersonnel: it is your duty to uphold the law and maintain order. How can you uphold the law if you consistently break it? How can you maintain order if you incite chaos? Due process is THE LAW. YOU ARE NOT JUDGE DREDD. I understand that youre scared, but once youre done pumping a man full of lead, why dont you get on your radio and call an ambulance instead of crowd control? Be a decent human being. Turn in those who bring corruption into your ranks, support your fellow officers who seek only to maintain the good in your organization, promote honesty and transparency, and for the love of all that is holy STOP ABUSING AND KILLING PEOPLE.
