I havent looked for a job since 2001 (my last hotel job-the St Regis in Los Angeles). Since then, I worked with family at building various businesses, some went under, others did and are doing great. Now that I moved to Dallas, Ive been serious about getting a job in Finance/Accounting. This has been my experience so far. Not that there is anything wrong with it, I just need to get used to this new way of looking for a job. 1. I can no longer go into a companys personnel office and apply to get a job. Even at a retail location I see kiosks where people have to go on the Internet and apply. 2. I have a Monster, Careerbuilder, Startwire, Ziprecruiter, and LinkedIn account. It seems more online job search sites want me to join their sites. I now get 700,000 emails about jobs every single day. I wish I had not used my regular email address. 3. I find a job that I am interested in on one of the sites listed above. The link then takes me to recruiters. So I fill out recruiter forms online for the positions they have advertised. Some have auto fill options for my résumé by using LinkedIn logins, but I still have to spend a good 30-40 minutes making sure everything is correct. 4. On the occasion where there is an actual company hiring, I have to go into that companys site and fill out information again. Another 30-40 minutes per application (who are they kidding by saying 15 minutes?) 5. Career Fairs. No comment. 6. Referrals. So far, theyve only given me their recruiters, which by the way have been great. My school offered a great résumé polish through Careerbuilders Career Services for free (I already paid for it through tuition is my assumption, but free sounds nice), which I used and actually really love the way my résumé looks and sounds. In my opinion, the old way where I printed 300 résumés and mailed to various employers, was a lot faster. I would actually get rejection letters in the mail, and then again I also had follow up phone calls and got jobs. It is very interesting to see how things have changed. Maybe this is a better way for employers to weed out candidates. Like I said before, I just need to get used to it. By the way, Dallas is fabulous! Michael and I are going to have a phenomenal run there!
