I haven’t posted for a couple weeks as I have been laying low - TopicsExpress

I haven’t posted for a couple weeks as I have been laying low recovering. My two week check up went very well. The nurse called my name in a full waiting room and I got up and walked over to her. She said no sir, I am looking for Jim Nelson. I told her that was my name. She said well there must be two of you, I am looking for the one that had total hip replacement two weeks ago. I told her that was me and she looked stunned. As she brought me back I ran into Dr. Hartman in the hallway. I wasn’t going to see him that day, but he stopped as he was going into a room and said, Dr. Nelson that’s remarkable. He called over several colleagues and had them watch me walk and they were quite impressed. That made me feel the work over the past ten months swimming 6000+ yards per week and the early aggressive post surgery rehab was worth it knowing I would need this surgery sooner than later. The down side again, is I always respond to the anesthesia poorly post operation. It shuts my GI track down and I end up with ileus, a condition some get, some more than others, unfortunately for me more. I also have some anemia again, though not like last time. I typically run abnormally high hemoglobin, so when my drops to 10 or 11, I have a longer way to go to get back to “my” normal. My rehab consisted of Kirstin our PT coming by three times for some early movement and essentially waking up the body exercises. Thank you Kirstin. Love ya. After that I added my own twist again with a lot of early walking, miles per day. Stabilization exercises, walking on uneven ground carefully to activate my stabilizers of the hip and of course Active Release Technique for pre and post surgery scar tissue to increase mobility. Yesterday at the cabin I walked just under two miles in 30 minutes on the trail along Lake Superior which has many long slope like hills. While I need to be stronger yet to work, I feel about four-six weeks will do. The job is physically demanding or else I could be back by now. My rehab is based on what I have been preaching. The functional movement screen (FMS) (functionalmovement) principles and corrective exercises. It worked wonders for both my hips. Dr. Hartman told me I was in the 99 % tile of hip replacement recovery at two weeks and this includes those younger. So, again, I thank Dr. Hartman for a life altering surgery and am grateful. I also want to thank my associate and friend Dr. Brian for being there along with our new associate Dr. James. Further, I know these down times have made it more difficult on our staff and thank them. The down time has and will give me time to study and bring in more interventions that truly set us apart from others. Thank you for all the well wishes, they truly pave the path of recovery, Yours in health, Jim
