I hear and see a lot of angst from friends (representing both ends of the Canadian political spectrum) about whats wrong with health care. Everyone blames someone for the state of our health care system (which, by the by just saved my life and did so without asking me for a Dun and Bradstreet check.... so can be at least acknowledge that it aint as bad as many places...?) and many take great pains to take the debate to a personal level; singling out the PM, a Provincial Health Minister or other senior health care executive.... really...? The problem with health care in Canada is simple; easy to address and would pay immediate rewards... the problem is that it strikes at the continued Americanization that has become too common place in Canadian government relations... Federal vs. Provincial rights... Whens the last time you truly and completely identified with your Province over your country ? (with the notable exception of a percentage of Quebec, but thats and other debate) Do you arrive in Cabo, get a drink and proudly say, Im a Manitoban....? Nope.... But; if you look at the debate on health care its all about whos in charge; who spends the dollars and how....., The Provinces often even make it worse, in some Provinces we let them create another level waste in health care regions.... Money down the drain and too many amateurs with their fingers in the cookie jar. Get the Province out of health care... period. Health care should be a Canadian issue. The people of BC and Newfoundland deserve the same quality and access as the people of Ontario and PEI.... Let the Federal budget fund health care; let individual health care institutions be responsible for meeting Federal standards, Federal budget guidelines (with a allowance for local issue/treatment) and answer to the Federal Ministry.... we need ten Provincial Ministries and the bloated costs associated with that like a hole in the head. Ill call a spade a spade; Provincial politicians are usually incapable of handling health care; its too big, too complex and to important to trust to their limited talents and myopic viewpoints. Our universal health care system was the brain child of Tommy Douglas, a Federal politician; every important initiative has come from Federal governments (of all parties) and I dont trust Provinces to do right by health care; they too often use it as a political football.... The cost savings of eliminating the billions (yes; billions) of dollars in costs of the ten Provincial ministries, the incredibly wasteful localized health care networks and the rightsizing of the bloated administration that local health care institutions have would fund real grass roots health care; MRI and CAT scan machines, cancer clinics, rehabilitative facilities and more..... Our American friends spend a great deal of government time debating states vs. Federal rights.... Lets not follow that lead; lets eliminate the rookies in the Health Care system and streamline the system; put the money in the field and not on the fat that is multiple layers of administration.... end Provincial involvement in Canadian health care.
