I hear people complain a lot about the Wonder Woman costume. They cry its too bright and not practical for battle. They often sight 300 and Troy as how her costume should look. Even Xenas costume gets brought up! Funny how now that theyve taken the Xena-route the same people (with some exceptions) wanting it complain. In all honesty the ACTUAL armor donned by Scythian women and Amazons would shock people. Its brightly colored, and guess what? The Amazons wore gold, red, white, and blue (with stars, stripes ext) according to the ancient sources! The American colors and symbols were used by many ancient cultures including: Persia, Assyria, Babylonia, Greece, Rome, India, China, and Egyptians. People forget that in Wonder Womans culture, the American symbols and colors were grouped together BUT had different meanings than they do on the American flag. Below are pictures of ancient armor from the time of the Amazons based on extensive research by modern artists, historians and scholars. The Amazon with the cheetahs is in actual Scythian/Amazonian armor from the Trojan war. The colorless drawing is of the Greek armor of that era which wouldve been richly decorated in jewels, precious metals and bright paint. The rest are statues colored in the actual colors used in Scythian archers, Assyrian, and Trojan armors. The moral of this tale? Wonder Womans costume is less ridiculous and more suited for battle than the actual armor (maybe excluding the Amazons but with Dianas invulnerability she doesnt need armor). Ancient armor was not only a statement of national pride but also a countrys resources and wealth. Full armor was not a factor in the ancient world. And the American colors and symbols? They make sense on Dianas costume as theyve been with us since the don of the earliest civilizations. While the symbols of the ancient world dont carry the same meaning as the present United States flag, the Amazons still wouldve donned them and recognized them. Remember Diana doesnt come from our time.
