I hear this a lot - I cant lift heavy weights because I dont want to look big and bulky. People fear that which they do not understand, so hopefully here is a little reassurance. If you dont have what you define as big bulky muscles at the moment, and your nutrition is structured towards losing body fat then you have nothing to worry about. Picking up the lightest weight and lifting it for a few dozen repetitions will not do a great deal other than making you good at lifting that weight. Look at it this way. The chances are more weight is lifted carrying a bag, laptop, shopping, or other daily objects. You dont suddenly get a huge upper back and shoulders from that. So if your thought process to only lifting the lightest weight in the gym is to avoid muscle growth by the same logic you should wear lighter clothes, avoid the ground reaction forces when walking (avoid gravity), wear lighter shoes, use automatic doors only, make bags lighter etc etc etc To look at what happens when avoiding all resistance just look at what happens to injured limbs where the muscles cannot contract - the muscles disappear. This is far from the toned look or symmetry that many are looking for. Lifting heavier weights may just raise your energy expenditure a bit more, actually give a stimulus to your existing muscles to stay there, and benefit many other areas of your life. We can all relate to not feeling strong enough at times. Combine this with intelligent and consistent nutrition (which does not have to mean counting every calorie, or crashing calories right down) and the fat loss you get will actually look good on your existing muscles.
