I heard a lot of people who voted against the rail proposal say we needed to make the bus system work first before investing in rail. They said this as if making our bus system more effective has little cost or political sacrifice. I believe making MetroRapid a true bus rapid transit (BRT) can help us achieve many of the goals of rail at a much lower cost, BUT it will not be free. This means more money spent for buying additional buses and the additional operating cost to run the buses more frequently. It also means giving up a lane of traffic on some major traffic corridors in this town, at the expense of automotive traffic on these corridors during rush hour. When faced with the realities of making the buses run right, I question how many of these people will show that they cannot stomach any short term loss of resources for their automobiles to make transit effective. Those thinking investment in our bus system is the easy political way forward are going to be in for a rude awaking. Getting true BRT will be as big a fight as getting a light rail line. Lets get ready for the battle!
