I heard a weird comment this morning about yoga, and sadly, this inaccurate thought seems commonplace, so let me clear this up: YOGA IS NOT JUST STRETCHING TO BECOME MORE FLEXIBLE!!! Your practice can certainly increase flexibility, but it should be building practical strength also (not Yin yoga, but Yin isnt considered a complete fitness method by itself for just that reason). Flexibility must always be balanced with strength and stability, otherwise it can set you up for injury. Sometimes you feel a stretching sensation in an asana, sometimes you feel muscles working hard, and sometimes your mind is bucking the whole thing and just needs to calm down, or maybe something else. Its all some form of resistance - thats what we gain from these postures. Flexibility? Yes. Strength? Yes. Balance? Yes. An opportunity to perceive resistance in some form, and learn to meet that resistance gracefully and mindfully? Thats a BIG yes!
