I heard an interesting story on NPR on my way home. The gubernatorial race in Maine has three contenders: a democrat, a tea party backed republican, and an independent. The democrat, Michaud, is an openly gay man, and has gained the endorsement of LGBT groups. If elected, he will be the first openly gay man elected governor in the US. His independent opponent, Cutler, is straight, but says his record of supporting LGBT equality issues is better than Michauds. In fact, Cutler says Michauds voting record has him voting against LGBT equality issues several times in the past. If true, it seems that Michaud is merely your typical candidate who supports what is most politically expedient. It would also seem the LGBT organizations endorsing Michaud are putting political recognition of the (D) before an ally who has supported LGBT equality all along, or maybe the groups would rather see the first openly gay governor over a true ally. Either way, if its all true, then it is just another example of what is wrong with American politics. npr.org/2014/07/07/329520358/in-maine-a-gay-candidate-with-an-uneven-record-on-lgbt-rights
