I heard this the other day on the radio and have done some looking into it. The word boredom was first used in 1852 in a book by Charles Dickens. Ancient languages not only didnt have a word for boredom, but the whole concept of being bored simply didnt exist. Apparently, the whole notion of boredom didnt come about until after the Industrial Revolution. Think about that for a while. Personally, Im sort of ashamed how often I look back on the time Ive spent after a weekend and didnt really get anything productive done. As busy as my own life seems to be to me, all too often I waste SO much time on doing nothing. TV, while theres certainly good programming, cant really be considered productive. I probably spend way too much time sitting and staring at that thing. Ive taught that to my kids, at least unintentionally. How about you? How often are you bored? How productive do you REALLY consider yourself to be? Just something to think about.
