I hope Peggy is looking down from the high-heavens and sees today that the only clearances taking place in Scotland now is getting rid of the parasites in West Minister who have blead Scotland dry to look after their wealthy Lords and cursed Monarchy. Peggy MacCormack from Lochboisdale recalled her childhood in South Uist in Scotland after the Highland Clearances. Peggy and her family were evicted from their small and forced to roam the land in search of a new place to live, after their local landlord decided to seize her farm to raise sheep. “How we enjoyed ourselves in those faraway days – the old as much as the young. I often saw three, and sometimes four generations dancing together on the green grass in the golden summer sunset, men and women of fourscore and more – for they lived long in those days – dancing with boys and girls of five on the green grass. Those were happy days and happy nights, and there was neither sin nor sorrow in the world for us … But the clearances came upon us, destroying all, turning our small crofts into big farms for the stranger, and turning our joy into misery, our gladness into bitterness, our blessing into blasphemy, and our Christianity into mockery. O a dhuine ghaolaich, thig na deoír air mo shílean le linn smaoinínn air na dh’fiuilig sinn agus na duirb tháinig sinn hoimhe.” Oh dear man, the tears come on my eyes when I think of all we suffered and of the sorrows, hardships, oppressions we came through.
