I hope to encourage stay at home moms not to respect their current positions less than any other career. In my fourth consecutive year, I am just beginning to grasp more than the basics of survival. We should expect to grow over time and develop a philosophy for our own families through trial. A working mother has her own parenting path to forge, which is equally important and challenging. But, I know what it is to become suddenly jobless, babe in arms, with no one telling you how to direct your day, a million voices in society with conflicting opinions, and you wondering whats next. Find your peace, because I think that becomes the foundation, and then take little risks here and there to create the home you dream of. Your risk could look like a Martha Stewart concoction or maybe its following a schedule, you know, for real! Its ok if it doesnt work the first few times (or ever). My biggest mistake has been not trying things—times when I say no too often or worry too much. Perhaps holding that crying child when we are in a hurry and resisting the urge to yell for control feels like a great risk to many of us. These are the little things that matter so much, but we think about so little. We are not in a holding tank until we can finally go do something important with our lives. This home we build, the gardens we grow in others, they are bursting with life and possibility, and they are lasting. Our season of being solely in the home with kids will change, but moments of beauty in the rich soil of childhood are as fleeting as spring days turning to summer. I am determined to pursue peace and excellence during these days and live fearlessly. They are a passing treasure, dirty diapers and all. And so are you, mom.
