I hope youre all doing well this morning. This Sunday will be the third Sunday of Advent and I have been intending each week to recommend a teaching series by our bishop, Bishop Julian Dobbs, dealing with the second coming of Christ. Advent is the season that the church sets aside to think in particular about both Jesuss first coming and his second. There are many questions that people have about the second coming of Christ. What will he be like? Will everyone recognize him? Will he return bodily or is his second coming some kind of spiritual reality? What about the rapture? Will there be one and if so when will it be? The Bishop turns to the Scriptures to address all of these questions in a series of five videos, each around 40 or so minutes long. Ive listened to the first four and they are excellent, well worth your time. The fifth has yet to be posted and it will deal with what is referred to as the millennial kingdom, that thousand years of peace referred to in Revelation chapter 20 following Christs return. You can find the link to the page where you can find all of the videos below, enjoy! Christian Education: this Sunday will begin wrapping up our series on recognizing forms of biblical literature, returning to poetry and then taking a look at apocalyptic writing and how you identify it. But the bulk of the class will center on a pressing question that continues to perplex Bible interpreters: since the Bible was written a long time ago from within different cultures and among people who spoke different languages can we distinguish between instructions that are meant only for a given time and place and those that are meant to be eternally binding. For example, in 1st Corinthians 11, Paul commands that all women wear veils and he appeals to the order of creation as one reason for that. Should women still cover their faces in church? Why or why not? This question has a great deal of bearing on many questions that are being debated in the church today; in particular the question of a womans role in ministry and in marriage. Its going to be a fun and challenging discussion so I hope you will join us. Greening the Church: this Sunday after the 10:30am service we will Green or decorate the church for Christmas. There will be a potluck (so please bring a dish to pass) and costume fitting for the pageant. We need as many people as possible to help decorate, so I hope you can stay. Reminder: All the ladies of the church are invited this afternoon at 2 PM to the ACWs Christmas tea at 2 PM. It will be at Anna Drehers house at 103 Vincent, Binghamton NY.There is more information in this weeks Update. For Parents: tomorrows sermon should be relatively safe for kids. Well be talking about marriage and divorce. So if you usually do not send your older children to childrens chapel, tomorrow we can return to normal. The text is 1st Corinthians 7:10-16.
