I issued the following news release this afternoon calling for an OPP investigation into illegal Liberal activities. Scott calls for OPP Probe of Liberal actions FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 7, 2013 QUEEN’S PARK – The scandal surrounding the Liberal government’s cancellation of the Oakville and Mississauga gas plants worsened this week. Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner Dr. Ann Cavoukian released a scathing report on Wednesday which found that senior Liberal political staff broke the law by deliberately deleting pertinent emails in order to avoid political backlash. Over the course of the investigation, the Commissioner determined that earlier this year, staff in former Premier McGuinty’s office approached the Secretary of Cabinet about how to permanently delete emails and other electronic documents. Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, said “This confirms what we have been saying all along. The McGuinty/Wynne Liberals will do whatever it takes, including breaking the law, in order to avoid being held accountable for this waste of a billion dollars of taxpayers’ money in order to save Liberal seats.” Dr. Cavoukian severely scolded the Liberal government, saying that “It is difficult to accept that the routine deletion of emails was not in fact an attempt by staff…to avoid transparency and accountability.” Cavoukian went on to say that former Premier McGuinty should have known better. “I had the greatest respect for (McGuinty)…that’s one of the reasons I was so disappointed with this.” The Commissioner continued “The fact that you’re just wiping it all away indiscriminately is just appalling.” It was even determined that the former Energy Minister Chris Bentley deleted all of his emails in order to “keep his inbox clean”, which the Commissioner scoffed at. The Minister of Energy’s office produced absolutely no records pertaining to the gas plant scandal because they had all been deleted. Scott went on to say, “It is very obvious that despite the Premier’s attempts to distance herself from the actions of her predecessor, her primary concern is clearly holding on to power at any cost. This government will stoop to whatever depths are necessary in order to accomplish that”. The PC Party is demanding that this matter be referred to the Ontario Provincial Police for further investigation and that a judicial inquiry be established to get to the bottom of these latest revelations. Scott concluded by saying, “If there were any justice, some of these Liberals should go to jail for what they have done to the people of Ontario. The actions of the McGuinty/Wynne government are no longer just a matter of corruption; they have now been proven to be criminal.”
