I joined the military because I thought I could do it better than the next guy. I believed in what I was doing. One of my core beliefs was that our National Command Authority would make correct decisions as to when to employ our soldiers in defense of the country. As a libertarian I believe in the non-aggression principle and that violence should only be used to defend. This song was derived from a Cossacks folk song and recorded, as we know it, by the Kingston Trio in 1961. I think this song is applicable to the human side of warfare. It is as haunting in its prose as the death of a soldier and the pain of the family. The dead know only one thing: it is better to be alive. youtu.be/4Qt57c7rnHM
