I jumped a just-sent-in-submission for critique ahead in the line. The writer wasnt ready for the full on professional brick in the face treatment. I didnt want him/her waiting and waiting only to get a let down at the end. He or she was still finding his/her voice. You dont slam a brick into anything that fragile. General advice for writing fantasy? Read history, the real deal stuff. Dont give characters the same name as anyone or anything mentioned in Tolkien. Cmon, its probably all trademarked. Did I say read real history? Yeah, that again. Its hard to make up a well-rounded fantasy world without solid grist for that mental mill. And then read some more. The library should be your second home. Okay, back to the rest of the subs.
