I just arrived in Kiev, Ukraine after four days in Ashkabad, Turkmenistan. I feel like Im half-way home. Turkmenistan is the most boring of the stans. Although Ashgabat is only 5 miles from the Iranian border, it doesnt have the sense of intrigue and cultural interest that I feel in other parts of Central Asia. Turkmenistan is simply dictatorship in the desert, with natural gas revenues to pay off any resistance. But Kiev is a real vibrant city. And the weather hasnt turned yet. Everyone is out enjoying the last days before winter sets in. DC/Virginia friends, Ill be home next week!
