I just attended one of the best medical conferences of the last decade of my experience: Lifestyle Medicine, hosted by the Joslin Diabetes Clinic in Boston MA. It was located in my favorite section of Boston--Beacon Hill near Mass General Hospital. The attendees where the kind of people (mostly doctors) whom I would loved to have been friends with in medical school because they would have helped to make the grueling process fun! Some of the most important take home messages came from Dr Walter Willett, a medical doctor and professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. Briefly, he condensed and summarized much of the confusing medical literature about nutrition, pointing out that how you look at the data can skew your conclusions. I trust his interpretations, which included: 1.) the Mediterranean diet works; 2.) there is no evidence that coconut oil is advantageous to other types of oils; 3.) that fat is an important and necessary nutrient in the diet, and should be included; 4.) that fat-free diets have contributed to some of the trend toward obesity; 5.) that eliminated sugary drinks alone would significantly positively impact the obesity epidemic. Keep posted for more insights.
