I just came back from a certain hardware store where I stepped up to the counter to look at an item I wanted to buy. Before I could say anything, the Anglo lady behind the counter asked me, smilingly, "where do you come from?" I replied, "Where do YOU come from?" Was it simply benevolent ignorance on her part? Or is it insecurity, that deep need of the outsider to constantly lay claim to this land and space, the homeland of our indigenous ancestors?
