I just finished making some significant changes in my Line 6 - TopicsExpress

I just finished making some significant changes in my Line 6 Spider Valve HD100 head. After exhaustive research, and the blessing of Line 6 (previously unapproved), I removed the outer two 6L6/5881 power tubes in order to reduce output. 100 watts has always been too much for me (even on stage, I never pushed my VTM60 past 40 watts or so), but Line 6 didnt make an HD50. So, I bought the HD100 and a THD Hot Plate, and rambled on. It sounded fantastic, but lately Ive been wondering just how good that thing sounds without the Hot Plate. So, I did it. OF COURSE I reset the bias (after removing the outer tubes it was 105mv instead of the recommended 35mv). This is a step you cannot skip. Period. After the testing, I put her back together and started playing. I tell you, theres nothing like the sound of a wound-up 50-watt tube head raging through a Celestion-loaded half stack. Nothing. It sounded fantastic. The Schecter C-1 Hellraiser let out a blood-curdling scream. Its tone was Death Incarnate. I like that. The Strat, with the proper custom channels, sounded even better. With an all-maple guitar that has single-coil pickups, a glassy, cleaner sound is what you want, even at higher gains. The massive compression that the Hot Plate did to the sound made it a lot different. It is much better now. Later in the week, Ill have more time to play. Rock on.
