I just finished writing a paper for university about queer families coveting handsome able-bodied sperm donors, and the problems that poses. Im happy to share it with anyone whos interested, let me know! Heres a quote: Queer parents, in their perceived struggle for recognition as a “real” family, yearn to be recognized by the state and mainstream middle class society. In absence of this recognition, the possibility of a threat is perceived: “Indeed, nonstatehood, while always potentially unstable, has come into a mature relationship with the imagined possibility of terrorism” (Animacies: Biopolitics, Racial Mattering, and Queer Affect 171). By this logic, if queer families feel that they do not have the security of the state, they feel threatened, and act from a place of perceived vulnerability. Through an interpreted vulnerability and threat, the queer parents in And Baby Makes More protect themselves by collecting as many conventional tools as they can in the genes of the sperm that they use when they make babies.
