I just got am invitation to a preview screening of Guardians of the Galaxy. I politely declined, as I simply have no interest in these types of films any longer. The world is becoming over saturated with this superhero stuff, and to be brutally frank here, its losing its luster with me and becoming less appealing with each film that gets released. This doesnt mean I think the films are good or bad, they just do not interest me like they used to. The fact that this stuff is so all over the place and that SDCC has become what it has, is just making it less cool for me personally, as opposed to most of my friends and colleagues, who think its a wonderful time to be a geek. To me, the most wonderful time will always be the seventies, when I first discovered these things and their magic was intoxicating. Now, I just feel its all about money, branding, and popularity. I understand its a different time, and my heart is happy for all the younger kids who are just discovering all this stuff, but its different for a 46 year old guy. BDE and WF were my statements on what I think of all this stuff. In my humble opinion, I took all these ideas to the studios and they fell on dead ears, now over a decade later, they decide to implement a lot of the ideas and ideologies that are moving them in a direction I suggested over ten years ago. It stings a little bit to hear all these DC execs and Zack to be talking about the first time Superman and Batman will be seen on fin together or about how the new bat suit is the first time theyre doing the whole grey and black cloth thing, with the black belt... I did all this stuff over ten years ago. No one can ever deny that or take that away from me. Im not bitter, I just smile and shake my head. Gotta move in a more independent, original direction and do my own thing. There was a time I was enthusiastic and quite idealistic about this stuff, but my time and experience in the industry coming up on 25 years, has worn that down to a degree, and my time on the water and developing my own content, is whats important to me. I wish Marvel and GOTG the best, as Im sure its good and will have a great opening weekend. I just could not be less interested in it.
