I just got back from the private memorial service given in celebration of Robin Williams life. It was held at the Curran Theatre here in his beloved San Francisco. I was invited by my friend Dan Scheffey who flew in from NY for it. The crowd was a mixture of family members, close friends, famous folks who had flown in from NY and LA and people like me from San Francisco who had also been asked because, well, because our being San Franciscans was a kind of reason in itself. I didnt mention I was going beforehand because the family was very careful about it not being publicized. It was all handled with such grace and decorum and professionalism. It was lovely, laugh-filled, and exceedingly sad. I was not there as a member of the press and I will respect the privacy of the family as well as the personal remembrances of those who spoke. I will say that I held it together until his children got up to speak. All three of them conducted themselves with such heartbreaking dignity. It is an afternoon I will long remember. As I will the man.
