I just got this moving message from a nurse: I just finished Knocking on Heavens Door. I was a nurse for 46 years -- from 1963 to 2007. Your book is so accurate! I was in ICUs from 1968 to 1982, and I was a burnout before burnout was recognized.I still cry today when I think of the patients we kept alive. I moved to the Emergency Room and then on to surgery, in the days when many patients had surgery whether they needed it or not. Today I am a Trauma Intervention Volunteer, and with the family -- a perfect fit. When a patient has a stroke or heart attack, and the ER doctor asks the family if they have discussed the end of life ..most say No. Even tho they [the patients] are in their 80s.
