GraniteFalls Walking Theater to be performed Friday, Oct. 3 Synopsis: Set in 1966, “Granite Falls Walking Theater: A Cooperative Legacy,” follows Gene Carlson and his daughter Jenny, as they seek answers and purpose, in the aftermath of the most destructive fire in downtown history. Ultimately, the pair come to terms with the setback by looking back to the examples of exceptional community forebearers and recognizing that in each of their stories of recovery, growth and success, the spirit of cooperative action has always been a prevailing force. The hometown of Andrew Volstead, prohibition and the modern cooperative movement invite the public to attend a unique, community-driven theatrical experience to be held in conjunction with the opening night of the three-day Meander Art Crawl on Friday, October 3 in Granite Falls. Beginning at the Yellow Medicine East High School Auditorium at 7:00 p.m., “Granite Falls Walking Theater: A Cooperative Legacy,” will take audience members on a historically inspired journey that will acquaint them with the area’s cooperative spirit as expressed through notable individuals and events of local lore. Though the third consecutive walking theater that the Granite Falls community has held in conjunction with the Meander, this will be the first without St. Paul-based, site-specific theatrical company, “PlaceBase Productions” at the helm. In their stead, the town’s former and current newspaper editors have authored the script, the president of the local community theater is providing direction, and an eclectic ensemble of area resident performers––ranging from day-job high school students to the city mayor––will bring the production to life...
