I just had one of #ThoseMoments where I thought about how lucky I am in many respects in terms of the things that are important to me in my life. Having had an impromptu 1.5 hour chat with someone, followed by a client Skype session, I then put on my tracksuit and had a little jog into town to do some food shopping. Got back, didnt like how the front was looking so got to broom out and swept up the leaves, then had a cuppa, followed by a little meditation and relaxation session before my final client this evening. As I strolled through town taking in the sun I realised that if I was in a regular 9-5 job I probably wouldnt just be able to pull on my trainers (or sparkly flip flops) and nip out whenever I choose, nor would I be able to go off for a meditation break. Now dont get me wrong, being self employed has its fair share of challenges and ups and downs, and a level of uncertainty as I never quite know how many people are going to respond to and book onto a particular workshop, and when Im not working with regular corporate clients I dont always know when the next client will be booking in. Weighing all of that up though, and despite the sometimes cyclical nature I dont think I could go back and give it all up for what I used to do before. Not that being in a 9-5 cant be great, and Ive had some wonderful times when employed (and some horrors), no, it is just that my mindset and psyche have changed since then. So I take the uncertainly and ride with it in exchange for the freedom of movement that it affords me. Marilyn Devonish
