I just heard the sad news that Idris Muhammad passed away. He might not be a household name but I bet youve heard him. No other drummer got even close to the feel he created when he brought his jazz and funk/R&B backgrounds together with Lou Donaldson, Grant Green and so many others in the late 60s. The 1970 Grant Green album Alive is the blueprint for almost all of the organ funk thats popular today; Soulives first album was clearly modeled after it. Idris also appeared second-hand on countless hip-hop tracks via sampling, several of which were big hits. And thats just the funk, he kicked butt for years with Ahmad Jamal and could play straight ahead jazz like a champion. I tried to get in touch with him a few years back for an interview and maybe lessons, but he had already retired back to New Orleans. Thanks for all the good times Idris Muhammad!
