I just learned from LTC (Ret) Tom Smith, Museum Coordinator at our Lawrenceville facility that there is a very distinguished, special gold medal being issued by the Republic of Korea for veterans who served during the Korean War. It is named the “Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal” and it is presented by the Government and people of South Korea, to thank all those who served during the war defending South Korea’s freedom. It can be awarded to all US, Canadian, Australian, etc. service members who served during the Korean War from June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953. Navy veterans who served in the Korean theater of operations during this period are also eligible and the medal can also be awarded posthumously to next of kin (please see criteria on attached application). The presentation would be made locally where the veteran or surviving family resides. In so many ways our Korean War veterans have been forgotten and this is a prestigious tribute by South Korea to let all those Korean War veterans know that their valiant service and tremendous sacrifice is appreciated and not forgotten. Please see the following link for more information: military/daily-news/2013/05/29/korean-war-veterans-honored-with-peace-medallion.html The deadline for applying for the medal is September 23, 2014; a very short time window to take advantage of applying. If you are a Korean War veteran or know one, please pass this information along as soon as possible. Thank you.
