I just learned that my paper proposal was accepted for presentation at the Popular Culture Association national meetings in New Orleans in April. I now have an excuse to watch degenerate TV in order to visit a city of debauchery. Gotta love academia. (Paper abstract below.) JESUS AND HIS SUPER BEST FRIENDS: SOUTH PARK’S CULTURAL CONSTRUCTION OF CHRIST AS AN ARCHETYPE FOR ALL RELIGION Defining the meaning of Jesus Christ was once the exclusive purview of the Church. Over the past several decades, however, Jesus has increasingly become an icon within American popular culture – even within the realm of comedy. Perhaps chief among those who routinely use Jesus as a source of humor is Comedy Central’s South Park. Known for its iconoclastic lambasting of society’s elites, South Park satirizes religion on a regular basis. While many episodes excoriate particular Christian groups (Mormons, Catholics, fundamentalists), the recurring character of Jesus is generally treated with a modicum of reverence. While pious Christians will undoubtedly object to South Park’s portrayal of Jesus, the series retains many of the orthodox doctrinal claims about Christ (being the son of God, resurrecting from the dead). As the dominant archetype of religion in South Park, Jesus is a cultural construction that represents all religion: essentially good and well-intentioned though somewhat naïve and ineffectual, only to be cynically and self-servingly misconstrued by the religious leaders who claim to be his followers. This paper: (1) interprets the meaning of South Park’s relatively favorable cultural construction of Christ; (2) compares the archetype of Jesus with other religious icons portrayed in the series (with special attention to the controversy over the depiction of the prophet Mohammed); (3) contrasts the above images with religious individuals and groups who are severely ridiculed; and (4) concludes by articulating the ways that South Park’s interpretation of Christ is representative of comedic portrayals of Jesus throughout the broader popular culture.
