I just read that the international trade in exotic animals is worth between 10 billion and 20 billion dollars a year (yes, thats BILLION with a B)--third in magnitude only to the arms and narcotics trades. Butterfly poaching and smuggling, in particular, are global criminal occupations. One guy, Yoshi Kojima, was arrested in Los Angeles by Fish and Wildlife agents in 2006 for selling several specimens of Ornithoptera alexandreae to customers in the U.S.--an endangered butterfly that sells for $8,000 a pair (see picture).
