I just read this book in the library, and by late afternoon till library about to close, it took me three to four hours, and I didn’t finish, only 1/4, which for me the pace was slow. There were many equations, that took me considerable time to understand, but that won’t be my motivation to read, what I needed was to get a full picture on how soil study in the West, and this book is an advanced, and teaches on calculating, but on second thought this is a computer age, one could probably types a few gathered figures, and a handy program will do all works; however, this soil science is pretty old in today’s standard, published in 1994. I appreciate the details on introducing as editorial spelt out, but also on: salinity in soil, nitrogen and whole chemical effect, though I don’t really think this book included all situations, and as soils on different part of this planet, that’ll be widely separated from this book’s reach, but this author also compared Nigeria and the U.K. on various effects for organic decomposition and the like. The book’s language is plain and simple, but the hard part is author brought extensive explanation on both mathematics and chemistry, and these, I guess for a researcher or people wanna study, or for the teacher who just came to the Farming Class, they are specialized on this, and as a layman, it’ll be purely for curiosity, and surely, to comprehend and get a full picture, it’ll be a first-step of gaining experience, as keeping one’s lands fertilized, shall be crucial. I also wouldn’t expect simply reading through this book, I’ll be an expert, but what I am aiming for, is to take a bit from author’s experience, as he mentioned on salinity and some plants as cotton, barley, that could resist, and rice which has low tolerance, that’s new for my understanding before this afternoon in the library. And the reading was slow, and I spent too much of time sit on a foamy chair; also kids in the library watching movies, they were pretty loud, but it didn’t bother me. As I just checked on Amazon, there are tons of soil science, books that packed their digital bookshelf, I wonder how come there were only a few in my nearby local library, which carried a name ‘national,’ well, it’s probably alright for me, I might simply do not have enough time to read all.
