I just read this from SC Neighbors and as a neighbor, say thank you to them for rethinking their mission. ...because of the growth of our ministry and our difficulty controlling behavior, especially in the last month or two, our board has decided to temporarily suspend several of our ministries, pending rethinking and retooling how we go about these ministries. The following ministries will stop operations beginning on Monday October 6: Sunday lunch Tuesday dinner Sunrise Hangout (early morning warm-up breakfast) Showers We will continue to host the Faith Community Shelter along with five other churches of the Association of Faith Communities (18 selected and screened individuals) on Tuesday and Saturday nights. We will continue to have a food pantry on Mon and Friday mornings to give out boxes of food to the needy. Our staff who live in campers will stay and continue to patrol and try to monitor behavior on the circle. But the larger programs which draw larger crowds are being discontinued for now. We want to stress both to our homeless neighbors and our critics that we are not abandoning our call to engage in homeless ministries. Our intention is to be back in business before the holidays, and before the stormy weather really sets in. But we believe that we must rethink and retool how we go about it. We specifically hope not to have a ministry as large, drawing the kind of larger crowd that we have had before, but we will continue to serve our homeless neighbors, in what we expect will be a more intimate, family-like, and controlled way. And I am hoping that you and other interested neighbors will engage in the broad-ranging conversations we will be having about how to revision this sacred calling. We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Though nothing has been scheduled yet, Im hoping that you would participate in some community conversations to help us think about how to restart our ministries on a better foundation. I hope this alleviates some of your concerns.
