I just realized I have not played a Madhyamavati so far !! - TopicsExpress

I just realized I have not played a Madhyamavati so far !! (Hindustani scale: Madhumad Sarang) In Raajas Madhyamavati what stands out are the suspended 4th chords. This Raaga doesnt have a third but with 3 pair of notes with symmetric intervals: 1+2 (Sa Ri), 4+5 (Ma Pa) and 7+8 (Ni sa) - its as if Sus 4th chords are custom made for this Raaga. He is certainly the pioneer to seize this opportunity and gave an indigenous sound on his Madhyamavati based songs. His earlier Madhyamavatis were more classy and this was one of his first full fledged light musically arranged song in this Raaga. And you can see what I mean with the 4ths in this song. I had great fun playing this, especially the interludes! Come to think of it, this was the probably the first song in which I found Janakis voice to be very fascinating. That low pitch humming in the prelude is very catchy and it is easy to imagine someone like Sridevi for that kind of a voice ;-) And I am sure, I am not alone... !! Rajinikanth of this period was a superstar in the making. He didnt yet have to do any of his signature style mannerisms and he had ample scope for acting at which he excelled as good as any other great actor of that era. Raaja repeatedly used my favorite singer Malaysia Vasudevan for Rajinikanth in that period and all the songs of this combination are big hit. So this one is for the Thalaivar Fans !! Happy Weekend ! youtu.be/22UaIh70FM8
