I just received the bill for my recent ambulance ride from Brevard to Asheville during my bout with appendicitis last month. This was a 69 mile round trip in a much more modern vehicle than the one pictured. The total cost was right at $1000. Breaking this down we see that I paid $14.50 per mile for a not very comfortable ride in a very expensive diesel powered ambulance!!! It was fun at the time (probably because I was under the influence of some rather powerful pharmaceuticals) but the irony is that had I been able to drive myself, or have someone drive me in my much more comfortable Nissan Leaf EV it would have only cost me about .03 cents/mile for a grand total of about $2!!!
