I just saw The Monuments Men and Robocop and they were both - TopicsExpress

I just saw The Monuments Men and Robocop and they were both disappointing movies. Ill start with The Monuments Men! I cant believe a movie with an awesome writer/director, an awesome cast and an awesome premise could be this utterly disappointing. The Monuments Men was a film I was looking forward to seeing in 2013, but they moved the date to February of 2014 and I didnt know why they did that, but now after watching the film I can see why. I think people thought this movie was going to be an Oscar contender, but when they moved the date I think people realized that this movie wasnt any good. The same thing happened to The Great Gatsby because it was suppose to come out in December of 2012, but instead it came out in the summer of 2013. I personally didnt have a problem with The Great Gatsby, but I know so many other people did and if the movie did come out in December of 2012 it wouldve really pissed people off because they would be expecting an Oscar worthy film, which it isnt. Now as for The Monuments Men, I found the film way worse than The Great Gatsby, I know shouldnt compare it to The Great Gatsby because their nothing alike, but since I was on the topic Ill just say that it wasnt as good as that movie. The Monuments Men is a film that shouldve been good because seriously this film had a pretty interesting story, how could theyve screwed it up? Well, for one thing the writing in this film was lousy. I found the script very clumsy and very poorly executed. George Clooney wrote and directed this film and he did an awful job, which really sucks because I know hes a good writer and director. The films Goodnight and Good luck and The Ides of March were terrific films and George Clooney wrote and directed both of those films, so hes obviously got serious talent other than acting. I just dont know what happened with this movie, its like George Clooney wasnt trying because even his acting in this movie was really bland. Thankfully the rest of the cast members did a pretty decent job, like Matt Damon was a tad underused in the film, but for what he did I thought he did a good job. John Goodman, whos awesome in so many movies, was awesome in this movie as well. As always it was good seeing Jean Dujardin in a film and just like Matt Damon he was a tad underused in the film, but I still found him enjoyable. As for Cate Blanchett, I thought she gave the strongest performance in the movie, I know thats not saying much because this movie was still pretty lousy, but that still doesnt change the fact that Cate Blanchett is a great actress. So the acting was decent, but what really made this movie fall apart? Well other than the poorly written script, I thought the direction was done really poorly as well. Again, George Clooney can direct a film very well, but he just messed it up big time in this movie. Also, the cinematography was very sloppy because I found each cut scene was done terribly and so many camera angles were kind of unfocused at times. There were actually some pretty laughable things in this movie too, for example in some scenes they try to create some atmosphere to make the movie more emotional and artistic, but they fail horribly at it. There wasnt a single atmospheric scene in this film and there wasnt a single beautifully shot scene either. The Monuments Men was just a boring movie that tried to make itself artistic, but just ended up being sloppy and uninteresting. So, if youre into slow-paced war films, then I guess you might enjoy this movie, but other than that I couldnt recommend this film to anyone. The Monuments Men isnt the worst thing ever, but it was really disappointing and I wanted something much better than this. Ill give it a 4.3 out of 10. Next is the movie Robocop! The 1987 Robocop film is a great movie, I love its over the top action and I love its satire on the media and the American culture. I know some people might not think so, but the 1987 Robocop film is not just a gory action film, but its also a very smart sci-fi film. How the film was written and shot was just remarkable and I love how they made the movie very intellectual. Unfortunately they made two sequels to the Robocop movie and they both sucked, but they didnt ruin the first one at least. Now when I found out they were making a remake to Robocop I knew right away that was a bad idea. The first Robocop movie is a great film and no one is going to be able to make a better Robocop movie than that. When I saw the trailers to the new Robocop movie, I thought it looked pretty cool, but I was still pretty skeptical about it. Now that I saw the movie I think I had every right to be skeptical about it because it was a pretty terrible movie. The new Robocop movie pretty much has the same story, but they change a few things around and pretty much everything they changed was a big mistake. Okay just off the bat here, I will say there were two things I liked: the first thing was the black Robocop suit, it was pretty awesome. The next thing I liked was how in this movie they put Alex Murphys family in it much more. In the first Robocop movie Alex Murphys family were barely in the movie, but in this version their one of the main characters, which I thought was good because that creates a lot more tension and drama in the film. Now unfortunately all that drama went down the shitter when every actor started opening their mouths. Seriously, with the exception of Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson all the actors did terrible jobs in this movie. Joel Kinnaman plays the lead role of Alex Murphy/Robocop and he does an absolute horrid job. I dont know who Joel Kinnaman is, but I can say that he was the worst casting decision in this film. Abbie Cornish was probably the second worst casting decision in this film because she hands down gave the worst performance, but the reason I hated Joel Kinnaman more was because he played the lead and he was Robocop, so if you really screw that up, then youre the worst actor in the movie. Now unfortunately they put Michael Keaton in the movie and he plays the villain Raymond Sellars. Honestly, Im a big fan of Michael Keaton, so its really hard for me to say that he sucked in this movie, but yeah he kind of did. Michael Keaton is a great actor, as long as he doesnt play a villain in a Robocop movie, then hes good. Now as for Jay Baruchel, whos actually in this movie believe it or not! He probably gave the most forgettable performance in the movie. Seriously when I was watching this movie I kept forgetting that Jay Baruchel was actually in the movie, seriously hes that forgettable. Lastly we get to Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson, who are two actors that are probably way too talented to be in a movie like this. So yeah as for acting goes they were the only people that I liked and they were the only people giving good performances. I usually never see Gary Oldman give bad performances, so Im glad a terrible movie like this didnt ruin his good acting streak. Anyways, I should probably now talk about all the shit that bothered in this movie, which was quite a bit. The acting was the first thing that bothered, but I think I covered that, so Ill move on to the second thing, which was the action. The action in this movie was kind of boring and it was filled with CGI blandness. Now thats kind of a problem, but not a huge one, the huge problem was why wasnt this movie rated R? The original Robocop movie was rated R because its a gory action film, but this Robocop movie was PG-13. I feel like this movie did what the new Total Recall movie did, which was take an old 80s action movie and turn into a PG-13 movie thats filled with CGI. Total Recall and Robocop are both terrific 80s action films and what made them so good were their intelligent scripts and their creative action scenes. Thats why those movies were rated R because they put so much creativity in their action and in their characters they had to make those movies restricted. So the new Robocop movie failed when it came to the action, what else did it fail at? Well other than ruining Robocop they ruined another character as well, which was Robocops partner Lewis. You see Lewis in the original Robocop film was a very interesting, loyal and likeable character, who was played very well by Nancy Allen. Now in this Robocop movie the character Lewis was played by some random guy, who had maybe twenty minutes of screen time throughout the movie. Okay that I have a huge problem with! I dont care if they changed the character Lewis because its a remake, but why in the hell wasnt Lewis a bigger character. Now people could say Lewis wasnt in the movie very long because they wanted Murphys family to have more screen time, but I think thats bullshit because they still couldve had Murphys family in it while still having Lewis as the second main character. This could be just my opinion, but I think the character Lewis is a big part of Robocop and not having Lewis in the film for very long was kind of a rip off. Now getting to the fourth thing that bothered me about this movie! If no one has seen the original Robocop movie, then theyll probably not understand this issue. In this new Robocop movie they completely missed the idea of ED-209, if no one knows what an ED-209 is, its pretty much like an Imperial Walker from Star Wars, but shorter and it has machine guns instead of lasers. Anyways in the new Robocop movie they really screwed up ED-209, just like the character Lewis they barely use or even talk about the ED-209. So yeah that really bothered me! What else bothered me was probably the direction. Jose Padiha directed this film and honestly he did a terrible job. I think he totally missed the point of Robocop and just like the director of the new Total Recall movie he did a very shitty job. I can tell the writer was trying to think of something different, but I think the director just ruined it and plus the bad acting kind of ruined it too. I agree with the critics when they said that this film couldve been far worse than this and I fully agree with that, but at the same time this movie was pretty damn bad. I think I even hated this movie more than the new Total Recall movie and I really didnt like that movie, but I think this movie pissed me off way more. So this film isnt probably going to make my top ten worst films of 2014, but if I made a list of most disappointing films of 2014, then Robocop would probably be number one and The Monuments Men would probably be in there as well. I apologize for ranting on for so long, but I had a lot to say about this movie. So, in closing Im going to finish off by saying that this movie was really underwhelming and I would not recommend it. Ill give it a 3.7 out of 10.
