I just saw this young lady on the news presenting her argument for more diversity on the campus of the University of Michigan. She has a grade point average of 3.6 and received a 23 on the ACT. Unfortunately, it wasnt enough for her to gain admission into the University of Michigan. I say this with LOVE and as an twenty year veteran in the game of education. A GPA of 3.6 and a 23 on your ACT doesnt quite get it for U of M or Howard, Spelman, Stanford, Berkeley and many others. While I applaud the young ladys accomplishments, I question the extent to which adequate research was done to learn the requirements necessary for admission. The freshman profile for U of M is a 3.7 GPA with a 28 ACT score, MINIMUM. For every one of my students admitted to U of M, each had a minimum GPA of 3.8 and 27 ACT score. Some were valedictorians and some were not. Real talk, college is big business and admissions is a game of weeding out what they feel is the weakest link. It is what it is. Understand that your presentation is everything. Yelling, screaming and cursing will pretty much guarantee that your words will fall on deaf ears. Be very careful of whom you allow to join your band wagon. Be very cognizant of pulling the race card. There is a time and place for it, but if pulled inappropriately, it becomes the equivalent of the boy who cried wolf. Since you want to talk about race, please note the words of those who have gone before us. You have to be twice as good and work twice as hard to get half of what others have. Oh, you thought it was just something Daddy Pope told Olivia Pope on Scandal?! No, its the real deal. Is it fair? Fair or unfair, it is what it is. Being twice as good, and working twice as hard is how Thurgood Marshall became the first black Supreme Court Justice. Its how Sidney Poitier became the first black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. Its how George Washington Carver made trailblazing achievements in science. Its how Oprah Winfrey built a network, built a school and so on. So again, I applaud your accomplishments as I say this with love. Its okay to be angry or hurt, but use it as motivation to go a step further and leap higher. Step up your game, and the day will come when you are truly ready and you will not and cannot be denied. detroitnews/article/20140415/SCHOOLS/304150030
