I just spent part of my day judging Botany Journals for the Fairchild Challenge (For those of you who dont know, in short, this is a huge initiative to bring all things nature into the school systems to supplement curriculum) and it is competitive. I judged 4th & 5th grade. The kids were supposed to either visit or research an ecosystem and document as if they were true explorers experiencing the environs - and their observations would be appreciated for generations to come. My favorite (and I paraphrase) I headed into the Rainforest with my tent, my journal and a steak (well, because as you know, you can always use a good steak)
