I just spent the better part of two hours looking for the answer - TopicsExpress

I just spent the better part of two hours looking for the answer to one question in devotional law in over 20 books of Shariah. I couldnt find it in any of the books I own which are all in one school of law. I asked a teacher of mine who has been studying and teaching for about 20 years and he told me the answer off the top of his head and guided me to which text I could find the answer. Of course, a book I dont own yet. It amazes me how complex and thorough our intellectual tradition is. And I continue to stand amazed at the effort put in by the generations who came before us in not just learning and teaching but in writing these mufti-volume works on how to worship God in a manner pleasing to Him. And I continue to be amazed at how one persons heart can contain much more than any set of books and how much more useful it is to have a teacher than a room full of books. And finally, I continue to be amazed by people who think studying devotional law is not useful. What could be more useful than knowing what God has made obligatory, recommended, permissible, disliked, and forbidden?
