I just tripped over a vegan and was inspired to write this ... Having been an ethical eater and liver all my 65 years I dont find this too inspiring. I know where all my food comes from, including the meat - indeed Ive very often met the animals. I know how the soil and the earthworms and mycorrhiza that grow my vegetables have been cared for. I know how my carrots have died as well as how they lived. I recycle and always have. We throw nothing into landfill. I also know that every time I breathe in millions of micro-organisms die on my breath. Similarly when I tread the ground. I know that when I die my atoms will go back to the earth to make up other beings - mineral, animal and vegetable. I know that I am part of the whole. Mother Earth designed this wonderful planet we live on so that all death makes more life. I do agree completely with the concept of respect for all life. Humans are new-boy-on-the-block with regard to al evolution of life on Planet Earth, we are the newest species. We used - as hunter-gatherers - to know this and respect all the rest of life which is our Elder Brethren, we knew to learn from them too. We lost that when some idiot invented farming which brought the whole concept of ownership into being ... and so wars, hierarchies, gender problems and over-population. So being vegan misses the point, all the points, completely. Respect is indeed the base ... but that truly means respect for everything.
