I just visited Andersonville, my old neighborhood in Chicago, to do some errands. I hadnt been there in a long time except to drive through on my way elsewhere. It was a jolt, since my initial impression of the neighborhood was that its Urban Happy Town, quite a lot like the old Happy Town on Capitol Hill in Seattle. It was a jolt because it really is Happy Town! Everyone smiles, moves slowly, is unaware of movement around them, is kind of hippiesque, if not abercrombie and fitchian. I dont know how to describe the atmosphere. We used to think we were in some strange air pocket or that the water was somehow different there. The woman in front of me in line at Starbucks today was not just ceaselessly grinning, but dancing too. And here I am, all in black, as usual. I mean, Im nice and polite, but I dont grin like an idiot as I walk around the neighborhood. I believe Tara Nicole Brown called Andersonville cute when she visited recently.
