I just want to say that watching Big Hero 6 made me all sort of happy. It has made $409 million worldwide to date and, it was received positively by the critics and audience alike. This just goes to show you that it doesn’t matter what race a character might be, as long as there is a good story we’re willing to pay and enjoy the movie. Go ahead world, pat yourself at the back, you’ve earned it. That being said, Big Hero 6 should be called Baymax and the 5 ethnic nerds. The most human character in this movie was a robot, and that’s kind of disappointing. And I’m not saying that they deliberately under developed the characters because they’re ethnic, all I’m saying is that it’s just poor film making/story. We’re supposed to root for Hiro Hamada but he’s a disappointingly boring character. And forget the rest, their names are not even worth remembering because the movie doesn’t think it’s worth the time. Only development these characters get is a brief introduction by Hiro’s brother as to what they’re specializing in. That’s it. So if you remember the rest of 4 as the black guy, the Asian girl and the white girl, you’re not alone (just don’t sound racist when you say it out loud). The plot is very predictable, you can see the twist coming 20 minutes in. Come on movie, I grew up watching Scooby-Doo, give me something more challenging than the obvious “Oh no it was Mr. Jenkins the kind old man from across the street” routine. Despite the poor character development and predictable plot, I enjoyed this movie a lot. It was fun, it was somewhat heartwarming, but most importantly it introduced us to Baymax; who needs his own spinoff movie where he explores the world through his innocent robot eyes. Wait a minute! Wasn’t Neill Blomkamp working on something like that? (Chappie). Also didn’t Spielberg do something similar (A.I.)…? And didn’t Robin William also play an innocent robot (Bicentennial Man) discovering the world through his innocent robot eyes? And wasn’t there a movie about a cute little robot wandering the Earth after humans left it because it was over polluted (Wall-E)? Hmm nope, can’t recall any of those movies. I’d still watch Baymax get into all sort of robotic shenanigans.
