I just want to share this w/ my friends~ Within 9 months of landing at Plymouth half of the immigrant community died from disease, lack of shelter and food. Struggling to build their new settlement and relying heavily on farming and fishing expertise of the Native Americans, that first Thanksgiving in 1621 with 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans was not a festivity of surplus – it was a celebration of deep gratitude for the harvest, for the kindness of the Native Americans, and for their survival in light of all they had lost that year. This Thanksgiving, like that first one, we celebrate God’s provision with deep gratitude, and we recognize, as the Native Americans did, that there are those in our community who are in grave crisis. That is why hundreds of the PICO community, after feasting on Thursday, will be fasting on Sunday, December 1 – fasting for citizenship for the 11 million aspiring Americans. In mindfulness of the 1,100 families that will lose their loved ones today due to needless deportations, help us reach our goal of 1,100 solidarity fasters on December 1st. For 3 weeks, these fasters have spent their days gathered in a tent in the shadows of Congress, away from their families, subsisting on water and prayer. Yet, they remain full of love, vitality and conviction that their sacrifice will not be in vain. I am inspired by their demonstrations of faith and their courage to live out that faith through their sacrifice. On Thanksgiving, my wife, our boys, and our family will gather to celebrate the gift of our time together and all that God has overwhelmingly blessed us with this year. We will also remember that, every day, 1,100 families lose the joy of being together torn apart by deportation and detention. And we will practice radical hope through fasting and action, joining thousands of faithful people across the country as they make extraordinary sacrifices for a life with true dignity.
