I just wanted to share the response I received today to an email sent to Rep. Bellock regarding SB 16: Thank you for your recent e-mail in opposition to Senate Bill 16 regarding changes to the state’s school funding formula and how it would impact our local school districts. The points you make are valid and well-stated. I am opposed to Senate Bill 16 as it’s currently written because it would take money away from our local school districts and could contribute to higher property taxes for local homeowners. Our local education dollars should stay here in our community to support our students in the classroom. There is no doubt that education funding reform is a priority to ensure all students are academically successful and prepared for college and the workforce. Education funding reform deserves thoughtful and thorough discussion that includes all education stakeholders, parents, teachers, and members of the General Assembly. I joined other DuPage County legislators on September 19 to file House Resolution 1276 calling for the defeat of Senate Bill 16 in its present form; and instead invest in an effort to bring all sides to the table to achieve transparent and accountable education funding reform that doesn’t have Springfield picking winners and losers. Please be assured we will call attention to this during the upcoming Fall Veto Session. Thank you again for taking the time to write and share your concerns. Your feedback is always welcome and appreciated. I will be hosting a town hall meeting open to all residents on this issue in the near future. Please watch your email for details on this important meeting. Best regards, Patti
